SLOCAN FIRESMART DAY

Slocan’s FireSmart Day brought together a dedicated mix of local residents, SIFCo staff, and community leadership for a hands‑on effort to reduce wildfire risk right inside the village.

Volunteers joined the SIFCo Forestry Crew, the Slocan Fire Chief and SIFCo’s Slocan Valley Wildfire Resiliency Program Manager to clear underbrush and remove excess forest fuels in a designated forested area on the edge of town.

The event blended practical wildfire‑mitigation work with community spirit. Residents learned about FireSmart principles directly from professionals while contributing meaningful labour to improve the safety of their neighbourhood. By thinning dense vegetation, removing ladder fuels, and opening up the forest floor, the group helped create a more resilient buffer zone that can slow or reduce the intensity of potential wildfires.

Beyond the physical work accomplished, the day highlighted the power of collaboration. SIFCo’s guidance, the Fire Chief’s leadership, and the community’s willingness to show up made it a strong example of how local action can support long‑term wildfire preparedness across the Slocan Valley.
